Climate change is the most massive danger facing our planet, people, and economy. U.S. metropolitan areas, Memphis included, are the
largest contributors - generating close to 80% of all the country's produced carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Generally,
major cities are just beginning to measure their actual total contributions to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
According to Al Gore's book/movie, Global Warming is defined as:
"Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet
naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil
fuels such as coal, gas and oil, and clearing forests, we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s
atmosphere and temperatures are rising."

Memphis, TN is ranked down at number 59 on the Global Warming Climate Change scale made by the Earth Day Network. This low ranking
comes largely from a high level of inactivity to be involved in the effort to improve the situation in Memphis that is causing global
warming. Memphis is not a participant in the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, which is encouraging programs that help reduce
greenhouse gases and working in their own communities to promote urban forest restoration projects. There is only one greenhouse gas
emissions reduction program in the entire state of Tennessee, and it does not affect most Tennesseans as it is designed for drivers of
commercial trucks. The state does not have required reporting and registry of greenhouse gas emissions, and it has no public benefit
funds allocated to help the effort.
