What's Going On

Our planet has been providing varied and bountiful gifts. However, as a species, individuals, and community, we have enjoyed beyond a sustainable rate.

The Earth Day Network's Urban Environment Report ranks the 72 most populated cities in the United States on various factors that affect the quality of life and environment in those cities. The best city listed is Fargo, ND - the 66th most populous city in the United States. Memphis, the 17th most populous city, ranks 50th.

Shelby County is in the top 10% of the dirtiest counties in the US.

According to the EPA's 2005 Toxic Inventory Report, Shelby County releases nearly 14 million pounds of toxic material wastes into the land, air, and water every year. This has led www.scorecard.org, a pollution information site, to state that Shelby county is in the top 10% dirtiest counties in the United States.

Memphis has many environmental issues ranging from pollution to climate. Each having its own unique concerns needing to be addressed.
